I had the lovely opportunity of a menu-tasting at an Oyster Bay, Long Island’s classic establishment – Canterbury’s Oyster Bar & Grill. I’ve been here a few times before, but only for drinks during the Oyster Bay Oyster Festival. The location is right off on Main Street, with other local classics nearby such as Oyster Bay Brewing Company and Taby’s Burger House. So if you’ve been to the Oyster Fest before, you’ve definitely at least strolled on by. Think I said “oyster” enough yet?
It goes without saying that oysters on the half shell were involved.
The daily menu has a rotating “Crisp Pizzette” of the day (think flatbread). That particular day featured one with sauteed mushrooms, avocado, melted cheese and drizzled with balsamic vinegar.
As with any good menu-tasting, drinks were involved. The drink menu boasted many different fresh and fruity cocktails, including this berry mojito pictured up front and center (I clearly shotty-ed that one).
These lightly crispy flash-fried oysters were served drizzled with a tangy creole remoulade. A nice spritz of fresh lemon and these were so yummy you couldn’t stop.
What really stole the show here was their fresh seafood platter. Like, I really don’t think I need to say anything more about this. Just gawk with me.
But I’m not gonna lie, this dish was probably my favorite of the day. It was a bowl of fresh clam chowder, topped with a scoop of mashed potatoes in the center (what?!) with actual fried clams shoved on top of it! It sounds so weird typing it out, but trust me, the flavors – on point!
Can’t forget the oversized pretzel with a beer-cheese sauce amirite?
A menu-tasting that ends up looking like this, is typically successful in my book. Will definitely have to be back to try the rest of the (very extensive) menu.
For dessert we had a tasting of local Long Island beers and I thought that was cute.
